The terabyte can be easily explained as a unit of computer memory or data storage capacity equal to 1,024 gigabytes (240 bytes) OR One trillion bytes History stands testimony that no other technology can boast of being as eagerly anticipated as 1 Terabyte hard drives. These long awaited and much deserved drives have altered the digital landscape forever. Mega bytes to Giga Bytes and Giga Bytes to TeraBytes. The evolution hasn’t been as steadfast as imagined. Yet, thanks to the perpendicular magnetic recording technology, 1 TB has finally hit the floors.

Both computer forensics experts and data recovery technicians seek to recover deleted data. Data recovery is primarily interested in bringing back files, while computer forensics tends to dig deeper, looking not just for deleted documents, but also for metadata (data about data – such as file attributes, descriptions, dates, and other information) and meaningful snippets of unrecoverable files. One area of particular interest is email.

When faced with a data loss disaster, the first thing most people will try to do is to recover and restore the lost data themselves. Unfortunately, this is not the thing to do, when you turn on and off your system, it can happen sometimes that the lost data is overwritten and this makes it harder for the professional data recovery experts to retrieve the lost data. Sometimes when operators try to retrieve lost data they can achieve their goals, however it can depend on what the problem with your operating system is, whether the information is retrievable by the user or if the information will be overwritten. So, if you are in doubt as to whether the information will be lost to you and made harder to retrieve and if the data is important to you, consider getting the professionals in to give you an evaluation and a quote.

The stories are true; the names and places have been changed to protect the potentially guilty. A few years ago, Debby Johnson, an attorney from a large firm based in Kansas City, contacted me about a relatively simple matter. I was to travel to offices in Sacramento from my San Francisco-area labs, copy a computer’s disk drive, and locate emails sent by the plaintiff to his brothers and sisters, of which he had nine. The case was a product liability lawsuit for an amount in the tens of millions of dollars. The plaintiff claimed that his health had been damaged by an international firm’s defective product, although he was symptom-free at the moment. What was the product? Let’s say it was coffee. |
